2016 marks the 44th year Norm has been a Director of summer running camps. He is a former Brevard College Cross-Country & Track Coach (1967 – 1986), producing a record 5 consecutive NJCAA Championship teams. He is a 3-time National Coach of the Year and member of the NJCAA Hall of Fame, Brevard College Hall of Fame & Lyons Township High School Hall of Fame. He is Professor Emeritus of Exercise Science at Brevard College. BS, MS Education; University of Tennessee

Dave & Sue Rinker

Dave & Sue have played a major role in the camp development. Dave has been a Director of summer running camps for more than 25 years and is also a former Brevard College Cross-Country & Track Coach (1984 – 1999), a 2-time National Coach of the Year, a member of the NJCAA Hall of Fame, as well as the Brevard College Hall of Fame. He is currently the Head Women's Cross-Country Coach at James Madison University. BS James Madison University.
Sue is the Head Cross-Country and Track and Field Coach at Spotswood High School, VA and a USATF Level II Certified Endurance Coach. She is the on campus director of the administrative team. BS Virginia Tech.

Terry Smith

Terry has been associated with the camp for over 40 years. He currently coaches in Lakeland, Florida and has been a coach for more than 50 years. He currently Teaches at McKeel School of Technology. He is also the author of six running books. BA Northern Colorado, MA University of Florida, in Health Education

Ken Conner

Coach Conner is the BDRC Camp Manager and has been a staff member for over 20 years. He is the Track & Field Coach at the Kinkaid School in Houston, TX. He is a USATF Level II Certified Distance Coach. BS University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

Tammy Austin

Trent Austin

Slideshow Director. A former runner and soccer player from Cooper City High School, Trent was been at camp since 2009 with five years as a camper and this is his fifth on staff. Trent recently graduated from Stetson University with a BS in Health Sciences (Pre-Medicine) and a minor in Digital Arts. Trent was a Division 1 soccer player all four years at Stetson. Currently working on attending medicial school to pursue a profession as a surgeon specializing in Pediatric Oncology (children's cancer) or Pediatric Neurology

Drew Bell

Guest Lecturer. Drew Bell is the Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at James Clemens High School in Madison Alabama. Coach Bell has been a head cross country and track coach for 22 years. His coaching career highlights include 10 state championship teams, 15 state runner-up teams, and 50+ All-American athletes. In addition, Bell received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Alabama Track and Field Coach of the Year (two times), the Florida Cross Country and Track & Field Coach of the year (four times), USA Master’s National Track and Field Champion 10k (Honolulu, Hawaii), All-American and Academic All-American in track. Coach Bell received his bachelor’s degree in sports science and his master’s degree in HLSPE from the University of Mississippi and University of West Florida, respectively. Drew Bell resides in Madison with his wife, Bobbi, and their four children: Rosanna (26); Megan (20); Jase (14); and Morgan (12).

Raymond is a former Brevard College Runner who is in charge of running drills. Raymond is Currently the Sprints, Hurdles, and Relays coach at UNC Charlotte University. Raymond has his BS from Appalachian State University. He is a USAW Certified Sports Performance Coach, CPR/First Aid Certified, and USATF I and II Sprints/Hurdles/Relays

Brent was raised in Virgina Beach, Virgina, and ran for four years at high school. Brent also spent 5 collegiate years running, two at Indiana and three at George Mason graduating in 2016. Brent then went on to Collegiate Coaching at Louisiana State University. Brent is First Aid,AED, and CPR certified.

Dave Coulter

This is Dave's 15th year at Brevard Distance Runners Camp. Dave is a retired coach of 30 years. Dave Graduated from Old Dominion University in 1989. He was a Distance coach and PE Teacher at Landstown High School. Dave is USATF Level I Certified. He also Ran Cross Country for Coach Witek from 1985-1986

Cynthia Croom

Former Track & Cross Country Runner at University of West Georgia where I received a BS degree in Health and Physical Education. She been coaching and teaching PE for the last 30 years. Cynthia is currently an Athletic Coordinator at Swift Academy in Roswell Ga. She and her husband have 3 grown children and reside in Milton Georgia. Cynthia has been attending camp for the last 15 years.

Sean Doherty

Brandon Dworak

Brandon has been at BDRC for two years now.
Brandon is the Head Cross Country and Assistant TF coach at Franklin College 2017-Present (Franklin, Indiana). Brandon was previously the Assistant Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at Rhodes College (Memphis, TN) 2013-2017. Brandon Graduated from Denmark HS in 2006 (Denmark, WI). Brandon got his BA in Political Science University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2006-2010). He has an MA in Criminal Justice from Boise State University (2011-2013). Brandon was a DIII NCAA XC qualifier 2007 & 2008. His Half Marathon PR: was 1:06:37. His Marathon PR was 2:20:46. Brandon was a three time top 60 finisher at the USA Half-Marathon Championships (2012-2014). He was the 2013 Eugene half-marathon runner-up. Also Brandon was the 2015 Memphis St. Jude half marathon champion. Brandon ran semi-professionally in the Saucony Hurricanes group 2014-2015. He is also USATF Level 1 and CPR certified

Seth Funderburg

Seth has been a Senior Counselor at BDRC for three years. Seth is the owner and operator of Black Matter Training. He is a personal trainer and endurance coach. He currently coaches and trains in Orlando, Florida. He is a four time world championship qualifier for Duathlon. Seth is married with one child and enjoys a new tattoo quite often.

Erin Gallagher

Sheila Haire

Shelia has been on staff at BDRC for 20 years. She serves as our Camp Nurse and an active Masters Runner. She is a former Assistant Coach at Stetson University, and also served as BSRN Georgia State University. She is currently the Head Nurse at Emory University Student Health Service. Shelia is USATF Certified Official, and has been a runner for 38 years.

Scott Harding

Scott Harding has been on staff at BDRC for 11 years. He is a USATF Level 1 Certified Coach, USATF Certified Official, and NFHS Certified Official. He previously was a NCTCCCA President (2017). He is the Assistant Coach for Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track at Polk County High in North Carolina. He is also an Exceptional Children's Teacher at Polk County Middle School. He received his BS, MA - Appalachian State University and his MEd from Converse College.

Former cross country and track & field athlete at Campbell University. Completed undergraduate work at Campbell and now I am in my third year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Campbell. Currently work as a student pharmacist intern at Duke Children's Hospital with the goal of working as a pediatric pharmacist. This will be my third year at BDRC, first as a senior staff. Will be working with the challenge courses, dorm duties, and security. Lastly, BLS/AED, Immunization, SMAT II, and CPR certified.

Laurie Iliff

Laurie has been a staff member at BDRC for 2 years now. Laurie is a registered nurse and has previously worked in the Emergency Room. She is currently a school nurse in Saint Jones County. Laurie ran varsity track, basketball, volleyball and played club soccer in High School. She has coached soccer for eight year. Laurie's husband is a triathlon and marathon runner, they have five kids together and their daughter runs varsity Cross Country at Creekside High School.

Megan Lanzon

Megan has been a Junior Counselor for 3 years at BDRC and this year is her first as a Senior Counselor.
Megan ran for two and half years at Campbell University and graduated from Campbell with her bachelor of science in Nursing. She recently obtained her license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina, and she will begin working at a hospital in Eastern North Carolina on the general medical and oncology floor.

Macon Lowman

Macon has been a staff member of BDRC for 13 years. Macon is from Jacksonville, Florida, where she attended Bishop Kenny High School and was on the State Championship Cross Country Team. She was a D1 athlete in Cross Country and Track at Appalachian State University. Macon also received her BS in Health Promotions and Psychology from Appalachian State. She is received her MPH in Maternal and Child Health at UNC-Chapel Hill and her MSN in Nursing at Columbia University. Macon currently works as a pediatric and NICU Float Nurse in Los Angeles, California. She is BLS and PALS certified. When she is not busy saving lives she is also has served for 13 years as a volunteer coach with Girls on the Run.

Parker Lynch

Parker has been on staff at BDRC for 3 years now. He ran four years in high school, winning four consecutive state runner-up titles in Cross Country. Parker has also spent four years working in Run Specialty, two years at Fleet Feet and two years at Wagner's Runwalk in Tuscaloosa, AL. Parker currently attends the University of Alabama and will graduate in 2020 with a bachelor's in Astrophysics with a minor in Math. Parker is also an aspiring ultra marathoner with an interest in wilderness medicine. He is also an avid trail runner and mountain biker.

Reggie McAfee

Reggie has been on staff at BDRC for three years. Reggie McAfee is a current Bolles High School girls distance Assistant for Coach Cross Country and Track and Field /middle school boys and girls Distance Coach. He has his USATF Cross Country and Track and Field Level 1 and Level 2 coaching certification. His coaching career highlights include assistant coaching four girls state championship in Cross Country in a row. In Addition we won two Track and Field State Championships and two middle school state championships boys and girls. He recieved his B.S. Degree from the North Carolina A&T State University. He ran for 4 years in college in competing in cross country and track and field and competed in the 800, 1500, 5,000 , 10,000m and steeplechase. Currenlty working as an Elemntary P.E. Instructor. He is Owner of his own business call Mac Sports, Motivation Attitude and Character, "Better Person-Better Athlete, works on training speed and agility and endurance training for all sports.

Alex has been on staff at BDRC for four years. Assistant Cross Country Coach at American University. Alex is a 2 time DIII National Qualifier and held 2 school records for Rhodes College (B.A. Environmental Studies '16). He is also a USATF Level I coach, and First Aid,AED, and CPR certified.

Coach Peoples "The Mayor" is currently the head Men and Women's Cross Country and Track Coach at Polk County HS, NC. Deborah has been on staff for 6 years now at BDRC. Deborah attended BDRC as a camper with Coach Sully. She was a NAIA National Qualifier for 2 consecutive years. She is currently employed with Intercontinenal Hotel Groups (IHG) as a Hotel Standards Specialist and resides in Winter Haven, FL. BS in Business Administration and minor in Hospitality Tourism Management from Webber International University.

Mark Rinker

Assistant Coach (Middle Distances) at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Spent 6 years as the Assistant Coach with the OTC Elite in Eugene, Oregon where he worked with multiple World and Olympic Medalists. Ran for his father (Dave Rinker) and was a 3 year letterwinner at James Madison University where he graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology and minors in Business and Coaching.

Andrew Smith

Andrew has been a part of BDRC his whole life but has officially been on staff for 6 years. He attended Ridgeview High School in Jacksonville, FL where he ran Cross Country and Track. He is a graduate of Flagler College with a degree in Criminology. During his time there, he competed in cross country and track and since graduating, he has coached basketball and football in Lakeland, Fl.

Becky & Cade Smith

Becky and Cade Smith have both been on staff at BDRC for two years now. Becky Smith currently lives in Starkville MS, and works for Mississippi State University Extension as an economic educator. She has been running since middle school and is now a proud mom of three runners. She is a booster mom for Starkville High School Cross Country and Track Teams.
Cade Smith grew up in Mississippi playing football and power lifting. After playing Division III football he fell in love with running. He enjoys running marathons and ultra-marathons. Becky and Cade met at their local running club twelve years ago. Running has been a central part of their family. Cade works at the University of Mississippi and serves as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Community Engagement. Cade splits his time between Oxford, MS and where he works and Starkville where his family lives.

Kris & Marissa Smith

Kris and Marissa actually met and fell in love at BDRC, Kris has grown up at camp but officially has been on staff for 8 years, and this is Marissa's 4th year on staff. Coach Kris Smith teaches P.E. and Pre-Algebra and coaches Cross Country at Geneva Classical Academy in Lakeland, FL. Received B.S from the University of Florida with a degree in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with a specialization in fitness and wellness. Fun Fact: He is Coach Terry Smith's oldest son! Marissa is a former cross country and track & field athlete at Florida Southern College, a Division II program in Lakeland, FL. She graduated from Florida Southern in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Public Relations. Currently, Marissa teaches 6th grade reading and writing at the Roberts Academy in Lakeland, a school for students with dyslexia. In addition to teaching, Marissa coaches the girls cross country team at Lakeland High School. As a former BDRC camper, she attended George Jenkins High School as a four year cross country and track & field athlete. They both share a favorite running buddy, their Australian Cattle Dog, Ellie.

"Coach Sully" has been on staff at BDRC for 22 years. He has been a runner since 1965 and coaching since 1975 : New Paltz H. S. New York Assistant Cross Country '75, Orange Park H.S. Assistant Track Coach in Jax fl 80,81,...Hyde School Head Cross Country and Track Coach In Bath Maine 82-85 ( State Champs and three High School All Americans). Head Coach At Episcopal HS 85-91 in Jax Fl. ( Double State Champs 87 in X C, Female State Champion in the Mile, Runner up State Champs 88, Runner State Champion Miler Female. 4x400, 4x100 State qualifiers 87-91) Assistant Coach At the University of Memphis 92-96 For the Womens Cross country and track teams. Head Cross Country and Track Coach For Girls at Mandarin HS Jax fl 97- 2005. ( five Gateway Conference Champion ships and one runner up, five coach of the year two State finishes in Cross Country Third fastest 4x800 time in state meet competition. Sarah Taylor

Camp Nurse - RN,BSN / Tactical EMT.  BDRC newbie, mother to two returning campers. Equestrian. Certified School Nurse for City of Orlando School District and moonlight as Med-Surg/Ortho/Peds provider in Titusville, FL . Former volunteer EMS/Fire/Search and Rescue. Former Pediatric Trauma Nurse through UPMC system in PA.

BJ and Jamey Temple

BJ and Jamey together have both been staff at BDRC for 6 years, while BJ has been coming to camp for 13 years. BJ is currently professor of Health Exercise Science at the University of Cumberland. He served as the assistant Athletic Director and Assistant Track Coach there from 2001-2015. BJ was the University of Cumberland 89 All- American, gained 14 National Championships, and was inducted into the University of Cumberlands Hall of Fame. He is USATF Level I and II Sprints and Distance Certified. BJ is also First AID, AED, and CPR Certified and Safety Instructor. He has his Educational Doctorate in Leadership, an MS in Sports Science emphasis in Sport Coaching, and his BS in Movement and Leisure Studies.
Jamey Temple is an associate professor of English at University of the Cumberlands, she is a writer who has published prose and poetry in numerous publications. She likes to say that she married into the camp, but that BDRC has become a family tradition. All three of their children have attended camp since infancy, which also means a lot of bottles have been washed in dorm sinks. As a BDRC Staff Member, Jamey assists in the office and in the dorm as a floor leader.

Callie has been a staff member of BDRC now for 4 years. She attended Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns, Florida. She graduated college from the University of Florida. Callie currently resides in Eugene, Oregon working in the organic agriculture sector, and doing online run coaching with her husband. She is currently training for ultra marathons and trying not to lose her speed. She enjoys working with runners to improve their Biomechanics and efficiency while preventing injuries.

Zackery Walsh

Zack has been on staff at BDRC for 7 years. He is our resident Trail Wizard aka one of our Trail Bosses. Zack attended Hewitt Trussville High School where he ran Cross Country and Track and served as the Team Captain and was State Runner Up. He graduated with his BS in Communication Studies. He is currently located in Decatur, AL where he is attending Calhoun Community College as Welding Student. His other passion is growing and taking care of plants and animals with the end goal of running a sustainable homestead.

Wendi Witek

Wendi is originally from Brevard, NC and grew up running in these mountains. She ran cross country and track throughout middle and high school and her freshman and sophomore year her 4x800 relay team were North Carolina state champions and broke the state record. Although she didn’t run collegiately, she still enjoys running and meeting friends all over the world to run in races which they call “runions”. She coached several seasons of Girls on the Run and still volunteers as a SoleMate.

Wendi graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Finance from UNC Wilmington. She has a Masters in Business Administration from Clemson University. She currently works for Epson America as a Business Development Manager. Although she is usually on the move with her job, she resides in Greenville, SC and is active in the Greenville community through numerous organizations such as the Junior League of Greenville, The Family Effect, Clemson MBA Alumni Council, and Executive Women's Golf Association to name a few.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading, spending time with friends and family, and hiking or playing golf.

Benjamin Zalanka

This is Benjamin's Third year on staff at BDRC. He was born and raised in Lakeland, Florida. He started running casually in late elementary and middle school. He started running competitively during his freshman year of high school at George Jenkins High. After graduating High School, Ben joined the University of West Florida Cross Country Team while pursuing a degree. In May of 2019 Benjamin graduated with a bachelor of arts in Psychology.
